Yes, but many will feed the gorilla with the corpses of the marmosets, so I can't earnestly recommend marmoset hunting until the gorilla is dead.

Chronic mental stress is the gorilla. Lots of neurotic people try to cut out smaller external stressors like junk food and cigarettes, and in doing so increase their chronic mental stress enough that they're even worse off.

yup the junk food and cigarettes are load-bearing coping mechanisms. I’m increasingly suspecting that focus on them is actually mistaken and even harmful

theres a bit of flexibility in the details of load-bearing copes -- distraction-eating highly processed sugary/oily foods and binge eating yogurt are both coping with food but the latter IME is less physically stressful and allows for more bandwidth to process mental stress stuff

i stopped eating ultra processed foods in December 2020 and i dont think i could have done a tenth of what i did in 2021 (medium dose of acid, walk outside an order of magnitude more, get my 1st full-time job, start meditating, move out of parents' place, etc) without that change

even much more recently ive noticed that stopping eating multiple apples a day (which was my last significant intake of carbohydrates/fructose) has opened up more bandwidth to handle stressful stuff that i had been carefully avoiding since January; there's a virtuous cycle!
