i asked a friend of mine in college about this and they said they were totally unable to relate emotionally to cartoon faces at all, like they just didn't register as recognizably human or something?

maybe, i don't really know what autism is these days but anime is notable for the level of detail it gives to faces + the amount of time it spends on them. easier to read, i bet.
