i think the view of it i acquired when i was like 10 and atheism discourse was a hot topic was extremely oversimplified. reading stuff like c.s. lewis is giving me a more nuanced picture of the best of what christianity has to offer
i'm thinking back to the oldschool stuff like "the bible says being gay is bad" and just being like... why did any of these people trust *english translations* of the bible??? obviously to really understand the will of god you have to read the bible in the original aramaic or w/e
Hm, I think most old religions do in fact contain lots of despicable exhortations. The only way religions survive is by continuous adaptation to their environment, finding ways around legacy impositions that become unacceptable.
Practitioners at a later time are forced to come up with galaxy brained reasons to take the nasty parts metaphorically, or explain them away as no longer applicable, in order to make the religion compatible with the milieu it exists in.
