my suspicion is the people who argue against therapy by saying, “just talk to ur family and friends!” don’t actually talk vulnerably to their family and friends
they’d be singing a different tune if they did

yeah i’ve never understood this. i think their real objection has to do with dignity. like it feels undignified (to a certain kind of person) to need to pay someone to talk to you, the same way it feels undignified to need to pay someone for sex

i guess the other half is it seems like being able to talk vulnerably to a close friend who you really like and who likes you seems a lot easier than doing that with someone who isn't selected for those things

this is *very* gendered i think, much harder for men overall than women. many men do not have a single person in their life they can talk vulnerably with unless they're dating a woman
