my suspicion is the people who argue against therapy by saying, “just talk to ur family and friends!” don’t actually talk vulnerably to their family and friends
they’d be singing a different tune if they did

yeah i’ve never understood this. i think their real objection has to do with dignity. like it feels undignified (to a certain kind of person) to need to pay someone to talk to you, the same way it feels undignified to need to pay someone for sex

Well the other thing is skepticism about whether or not a “therapist” can actually help

if that was the objection you could ask people you know about their experience with therapists, there are lots of ways to become better informed. if the real objection is about admitting weakness then you will actively refuse to seek out information about how helpful therapy is

People @nibrasibn follows or mentioned can reply
I think part of the barrier is seeing people you dont respect (or who you otherwise see yourself as fundamentally different from) rave about it and thinking “yeah thats the type of person it helps”. Unless you identify with them at core, their opinions dont really matter.

that’s a fair point

Wouldn't studies be more useful than anecdotes?

There are lots of bad/mediocre therapists around, though - I'm under the impression that at least some of the "just talk to your friends" comments come from people who *have* (or whose friends have) seen therapists that basically weren't any better than talking to a friend.
