my suspicion is the people who argue against therapy by saying, “just talk to ur family and friends!” don’t actually talk vulnerably to their family and friends
they’d be singing a different tune if they did

yeah i’ve never understood this. i think their real objection has to do with dignity. like it feels undignified (to a certain kind of person) to need to pay someone to talk to you, the same way it feels undignified to need to pay someone for sex

there’s a type of guy who you have to drag kicking and screaming to the doctor; same sort of pattern. unacceptable loss of dignity to admit weakness and a need for help
in healthier communities they would be balanced out by friends or family who could drag them places

thx for the beautiful articulation
what gets me is: “need to pay someone to talk to you”
they’re confusing talking with emotional work/support. it’s like confusing being able to write a tweet with being a novelist. drastically different lvls of skill
i know you know this tho

this gets at the stuff other people have mentioned about it being difficult to find a good therapist tho! plausibly the median therapist is mostly providing value by just being a person you can talk to at all, you may have to work hard to find one who can *actually do therapy*
