I sort of feel like I don't know how to give a genuine compliment.
I told someone I was meeting that they looked nice recently, and it came off as so corporate and insincere, like I meant it as a social formality. How to get around this?

more specific! more detail!
there's a sort of "proof-of-work" aspect; how do they know you're paying enough attention to actually tell how they look? you give specific details

genuine, specific, detailed compliments are shockingly rare, especially for men, and ime literally everyone loves getting them. it is actually fine, no seriously, really. you can easily make someone’s day if not week or month!!!

Yeah, +1 to this, the devil is in (noticing and appreciating) the details
Best compliment are often:
- something that most other folks miss (i.e. comment on a hot girl’s mind/style, not her looks)
- something that isn’t part of their normal self-identity but rings true to them
