would it bother you less if the mostly accidental name had ended up being more accurate, like "rationalist adjacent"?

I don't think the name is going to stick, honestly. "ingroup" is the replacement and it gets said much more

I do, but my reaction to “ingroup” is just aesthetic. Reminds me of bullying of exclusion. But actually this community seems like they care more about niceness than I do, lol.

also yes, I kept this conversation going bc (1) I really respect your meditation post and (2) this is pretty much my edge for how much harshness I can tolerate and it's good to practice

Well you were delightful to speak w. I can be pretty cranky, but I legit did not know how gentle the post-rat norms were and thought I was just doing Twitter. I can be nice, too, I swear!

I might be uhm, upper quintile gentle, even for these parts. I have two young daughters and have been going through Some Shit trying to integrate my trauma so I don't pass as much down to them

you were totally reasonable, I can see how the name can be read as an insult. i am sentimentally attached to it because I associate it with , , and (not saying they identify as such) and the resulting big improvement in my life

the esoteric meaning of "postrationalist" is a person who is recovering from the totalizing memes in the rationalist ecosystem. it is a trip. especially because you can't just refute them by saying AGI is impossible
