it wasn't cheap but it wasn't brutally expensive either. eg, it was less than median home price in seattle; and our monthly bill for the mortgage + taxes is similar to our monthly rent at our Bellevue place

my suspicion is that the upper midwest is littered with lovely small towns and beautiful old homes from times when local elites had good aesthetics, and if you can work remote and want to settle down with a family: this is a life within reach of a typical technology brother
