i checked it out awhile ago but the actual people working under that label didn't seem like they were doing anything particularly interesting? happy to be wrong about this

there was a gathering in Berlin last year that I thought was amazing. too many big brains not enough vibe yet, but I think they're one gathering away from the magic unlock helps that they have massive financial & political capital

cynical take (sorry): most people with massive financial and political capital will always seem to be one gathering away from the magic unlock

slightly oblique: generally 99% of the time I am super friendly cheerful visa but the 1% of the time that I get kind of cold and harsh is when I detect that someone is projecting their own self-serving bullshit narrative onto other people, ie lying to themselves at/via others

most “mundane” version of this is a couple that doesn’t love each other but stays together out of fear and they have this shared implicit conspiracy to keep playing/extending the game. Similar with a lot of ppl saying they’re gonna quit X or do Y if only…

another is a group of people who meet or talk regularly about how fucked up their industry is and how they’re going to quit one day or do something radical and transformative. I’ve met like 20-30 different groups like this at some point. In my experience every single group failed

yea turns out they’re often sort of using the space as a kind of confessional. And they will yknow bring in slightly-radical activists or whatever and pretend to listen to them and nod along, “we must do better”, etc but next morning it’s mostly back to work unfortunately

and I don’t mean to dismiss incremental progress – i find myself arguing both sides here depending on who I’m talking to. I think it’s the pretense that bothers me most. I wish we could all be more honest about things with each other

i have thoughts about this. about the dynamic of loose social groups where the bonding method is specifically griping about their industry/work. and about how i looked up to them and how it twisted my senses of wonder and aspiration to do the work into something very misshapen.
