the funny thing about "spectrums" is people treat them as if you're a point on the spectrum when that's not how real spectra - say the electromagnetic spectrum - work at all. actual signals are superpositions of pure waves at many points along a spectrum, a whole symphony

spectra are not a 1-dimensional picture of a phenomenon, they are infinite-dimensional, each point of the spectrum is another dimension. i take this quite seriously as a metaphor for e.g. the gender spectrum, the autism spectrum, etc.
