do y'all actually know people who've been in therapy for like 5+ years and it doesn't seem to be helping them very much? i keep hearing about these people but i don't actually know any. what kind of therapy do they do?
Conversation
never 'in therapy for 5+ years' but 'in therapy for 6mo to a year several times'
but there's always this point where i ask 'hey, how freely can i talk about suicide and or murder' and they give me an honest answer and that's the end of the relationship.

I had a guy who taught me how to talk about these with him, making clear they were only ideations and that I had no plans, etc.
Some let you talk about "a friend struggling with these thoughts." Etc.
You need to be able to talk about the darkest shit to properly heal.

I go in session one and say "1. I cannot talk about myself without reference to the following philosophers and models from psych 2. these are the ways in which I ideate, I have never seriously attempted suicide is that clear? 3. I'm going to transfer emotional attachement--

and arousal to you at some point and then seek to undermine what your telling me by attacking your models and theories, you good with all that?"
I go to the only one that said yeah that makes sense totally

ha dude that's *awesome*, mad props for being so clear about what you need
it took me a decent number of tries and several failed months with others but I'd highly recommend going for this level of clarity (assuming yr insurance or wealth allows you the option of shopping around)

Yeah I'm not really like a check anyone else's privilege kind of guy, but I will absolutely acknowledge that I paid cash for my therapist and that freed me from so many bullshit constraints
Not everyone can do it of course
