do y'all actually know people who've been in therapy for like 5+ years and it doesn't seem to be helping them very much? i keep hearing about these people but i don't actually know any. what kind of therapy do they do?

There was a viral tweet a while ago where someone talked about lying to his therapist that everything’s fine and there were like hundreds of replies saying the same thing

jeez :/ you'd think at some point either the therapist would notice that nothing is changing or the client would be like "well this is not particularly helpful is it huh"

it might happen eventually, but basically in practice its like an infinite warmup session, always feels like some minor progress is being made. and it takes some initiative on some party to be like "ok we've been circling the same ground for 3-6 months..."

one pattern I've seen is where the client reveres therapists opinion too much, and therapist does not challenge or disabuse them of this - to "own their own life"
they are there to guide and challenge not to tell you what to do

Therapists may pressure you to say that things are improving on the CBT-inspired hopes that autosuggestion effects will make it come true but obviously this strategy destroys feedback loops

Some people in therapy may have a hard time standing up for their thoughts and experiences, and telling the therapist that this does not work out.

yeah that makes sense :/
the stuff i do with clients is very client-focused in the sense that basically all the insights come from them, i usually don't try to push anything onto them. their experience is primary, it's the only way change happens
