do y'all actually know people who've been in therapy for like 5+ years and it doesn't seem to be helping them very much? i keep hearing about these people but i don't actually know any. what kind of therapy do they do?

Several yrs with a psychologist doing CBT-ish goal setting & talk therapy. Problem was I kept running into obstacles in making progress on any goals, & I had trouble explaining why or finding the words to talk about my feelings, & he didn't know how to draw it out of me.

I'm sure he did help me in some ways, esp. with short term stuff, but can't point to anything particular in sustained progress. Just stuck around so long b/c I liked him as a person & knew I needed therapy but not who else to try. Still looking now for a good fit.

finding the words to talk about your feelings is real key ime! bio-emotive / NEDERA is the most powerful practice i know for doing that specifically and it's helped me a ton, here's the website:
