so what's up with the trope where children have access to magic and then lose it as a prerequisite to growing up? where does it come from, what is it for?

In books this often happens because the kids lose touch with whatever truth about themself or the world they had access to, but it's not always gone forever; as adults they can often regain the power they had as a child if they regain that connection.
