being afraid of being cancelled etc is not exactly a new thing, the fear of the authority of anonymous public opinion is decades old, probably centuries, probably millennia and when people are anxious and despairing it creates a vacuum that invites fascism

it’s plausible and likely I think that our recent predecessors - parents and grandparents – were collectively more anxious than we are, but they just didn’t have as many avenues to talk openly about it

it seems like the word “neurotic” used to have a very specific meaning that’s since been kinda diluted. Not surprising but I’m vaguely curious to know more about this
