I also do think you can easily change content in those high-energy states not just emotional tone. Now in meditation I can sort of do either I think maybe kinda (?) but usually choose the tone. I don’t know what’s exactly memory reconsolidating or how the mechanics work

I’d also totally believe that the brain is a nearly lossless append-only database and by “editing the content” you’re adding a new memory and setting it as primary, even though the source to the old one is still around somewhere. But it certainly feels like editing

i haven’t been following this conversation carefully but i’ll just report that i continue to find the concept of “memory editing” deeply violating for me personally, which is not commentary on whether anyone besides me ought to use it

I guess there’s the question of how soft/user-friendly this stuff should be. The three marks of Buddhism is ridiculously hostile to most people’s starting belief (there’s no self, nothing stays the same, everything is unsatisfying), but imo they’re totally right

I still maintain that it's possible to do all the stuff you're talking about in much safer ways than you're allowing for.

That’s probably right, fwiw I haven’t mentally touched or thought deeply about this specific memory stuff in a couple years. I’ve mostly been deep in Buddhism land for a while, which is adjacent but different frame. One day I might try to mentally merge them but def haven’t yet

Similarly, I’ve become far less interested in psychedelics, which I’ve come to think are a just a shadow of the real thing. And novel psychedelic protocols are a lot of the reason I was thinking about mass memory consolidation in the first place

If you only have a few hours you need to be clever and fast but if you have years you don’t

I actually just talked about this at the Monastery inspired Buddhist academy I'm at. IME the deep states of Samadhi you can get into are more powerful than more formful reconsolidatiom techniques... But sometimes they're much quicker at clearing out the cruft preventing samadhi.

Another way to say this is that the fastest way to heal your trauma is samadhi, and the fastest way to samadhi is to heal your trauma.
