two sentiments I smell in the water supply
"people don't really change their minds/you can't change people's minds"
"People are really susceptible to propaganda"
do you believe one or both of these? How do they reconcile in your head?
i just don't believe the first one. people do change their minds but there are a lot of dumb beliefs out there about how that process works. most basically, yelling at people with a voice dripping with contempt does not work
queer eye S6E1 is actually a shockingly good depiction of how to change someone's mind (with kindness, respecting their dignity, making the change feel safe)
in Queer Eye s06e01 the hair stylist Jonathan asks the client "are you wearing a wig?"
she lies and says No, and J has the grace to go along with it
my instinct would be to challenge the fiction, but J gets curious instead 'oh I wonder why she needs this lie right now?'
I actually read this as something I learned when studying to be a conductor. Learning what it means to be a leader is about identifying that you can’t change other people, you can only change yourself. Any control is indirect and results from building trust and inspiring change.
