me and a lot of people i know sure do love ruining our own lives by making up rules about what we aren't allowed to do and then following them straight into a ditch
Conversation
i say this with all the love i can muster 😅 and of course many of the rules were imposed on us by others 😔

told me recently that the proper term for this is "neurotic" which really makes a lot of sense and i gotta wonder why we mostly stopped using such a useful word
should i start collecting these or would that be rude

I talk a good game but the everyday reality of my life is almost entirely constrained by an arbitrary network of neuroses & anxieties & self imposed rules & stories of imaginary monsters that rope down almost all choices leaving just enough freedom to wiggle my little finger

just never think about sex 5head
Quote Tweet
at some point when i was an impressionable young lad i heard some shit like “men think about sex every 7 seconds” and whether this was intended or not i was left with the impression that this was bad, so i decided to never think about sex

there is this thing where it's great to discover these concepts for yourself, or through a trusted person in a safe context, discover that this applies to you.
but if people label each other as such, it is often not helpful, without compassion, becomes an insult.

If you’re curious on the “why” from a History of Psychology perspective, this book is a solid start

tl;dr: families of the mentally ill got sick of Freud blaming them for everything. They formed interest groups, allied w Pharma and Bio-Psych, and got universities to suppress/fire anyone who didn’t say “the brain is just chemicals, family environment is irrelevant to disease”.

not sure how it happened for me but over the last few years I've come to have that word with that meaning available and it's super useful

I've recently started appreciating & refining a concept of "neurotic" which is a strategy for caring about something that's based on trying to avoid various pitfalls or problems without a clear idea of what "good" looks like.
