there is this thing where it's great to discover these concepts for yourself, or through a trusted person in a safe context, discover that this applies to you. but if people label each other as such, it is often not helpful, without compassion, becomes an insult.

tl;dr: families of the mentally ill got sick of Freud blaming them for everything. They formed interest groups, allied w Pharma and Bio-Psych, and got universities to suppress/fire anyone who didn’t say “the brain is just chemicals, family environment is irrelevant to disease”.

I've recently started appreciating & refining a concept of "neurotic" which is a strategy for caring about something that's based on trying to avoid various pitfalls or problems without a clear idea of what "good" looks like.
