I think you improve your odds of success if you deliberately use wrong letters
say the first word is qwert, and QW is correct, it's worth doing asdfg for the next word, even though you know the first two letters are QW, because you might get extra info about AS

right. first few moves are “scouting” moves. my first two use a bunch of the most common english letters so i either know they’re there or eliminate them. it’s a bit like playing 20 questions. then at some point you switch to going in for the kill
The optimal algorithm is to partition the space of all valid words into equal sizes with each guess, to eliminate as many invalid words as possible. Once the partitions start to only contain a handful of words, that strategy starts to look like guessing the word
