I used to love xkcd my disillusionment came when I got his "Thing Explainer" book I thought my kids would love it, he explains complicated stuff using only the 1000 most common English worlds twitter.com/__frye/status/

he had the mandate of heaven and then he lost it. my favorite ones were always the really early ones full of heart and longing and he stopped doing that :/

This is one of my favorites, but it's only great if you've read the book in question. A lot of the best xkcds are niche, feels almost like an inside joke. Does appealing to a broader audience explain the decline?
