how do you decide when/whether to send a first DM?

if the thought is even occurring to me i try to just send it
lots of things i guess. some DMs are things i expect to be misread if i post them publicly. sometimes i specifically want to start a private conversation for whatever reason (e.g. i usually switch to DM if i get triggered)
