generally speaking i find that the only way i know how to arrive at balanced moderation is to careen wildly first to one side and then the other, possibly multiple times. i like it that way. i get to really scope out the territory
people careening to the left looking at people careening to the right like "you're going the wrong way!" nah man they're just literally out of phase with you, it's fine, you might even switch positions later
sometimes you careen to the left and people are like "you're careening too far to the left that's not where balance is!" but honestly i feel like it's a coin toss whether you should actually be careening even further to the left until you really get what it's like there
I kind of feel like id rather take a theory too seriously at first, overlearn the shit out of it, then slowly painfully come to a mature balanced relationship with it after facing opposing evidence and perspectives
rather than starting with a cautious mature frame?
100%. I have this mental model where it's like taking higher order approximations where the sign keeps flipping, or like performing gradient descent with a slightly too high step size.
after developing this view i've found that it's been so helpful for facing shame wrt relapse
yeah! nothing to be ashamed of, you’re just thoroughly exploring 😛
and as you explore you’re changing, so the “optimal” place is always changing anyway
