this is maybe a dumb question but are there places in the world where you go out to vibe with, like, strangers at the mall and they seem generally happy rather than unhappy? idk if i’ve ever lived in one

I like wandering around high streets with nice shop windows for this. Paying particular attention to little kids, who are easily delighted
Also peering in at al fresco dining. Most people are having a good time when they're eating

The last time I really felt good about the public like this was wandering through London Chinatown mid-afternoon and most of the restaurants have some al fresco dining so it was just a whole street of people enjoying dim sum

people around here and in the bay still don't seem very happy even when they're eating :/
oh, except the teenagers at my *local* mall (not the one i'm talking about which is slightly less local), they're doing alright

I guess it depends on, like, how voluntarily they're there as well.
are they there because they wanted to go to *this* mall and get *this* food, or because they wanted to go to *any* mall and get *any* food
people eating dim sum are usually there on purpose

though I guess it's a sad time for the world right now
last time I was in Chinatown was pre omicron and everyone thought we were done with the pandemic
