What if anxiety&depression⬆️ in kids is not as much bc of phones&social media but more because of the rigged, senseless school system they function in, fraught with busywork, absurd behavior demands (don't move!), arbitrary grading, inflicted guilt

as much as i'm sympathetic to this pov hasn't that stuff been around for a long time, so it wouldn't explain a *recent* increase? or has it actually gotten worse recently?

Yep. And playing that game, with overly involved parents pushing it through, becomes the endeavour, rather than learning or even just teenaging. Bleak.

yeah i could definitely see that. the version of this i have the most direct exposure to is high school math contest kids; the pressure at high levels of competition seemed to me like it steadily got worse between like 2012 to 2018 at least :/
