a solid block of adaptations and sequels. people used to criticize this sort of thing as indicating that hollywood has run out of ideas and i don’t see that take anymore? i think we’ve all kind of realized that people don’t care about originality: what we want is a mythology

back to the future II made a joke about “jaws 19” and it was supposed to be over-the-top satire (so i imagine), like haha wouldn’t that be hilarious if moviemakers had nothing better to do than make 18 sequels to jaws meanwhile the MCU is at, what, 26 movies and counting?

The shitty part is, if you don't like these worlds you now have relatively few sources with the resources to produce good alternatives. And many of those—chasing returns—will mimic the big one hoping for shared success. And coz what's being mimicked is what you don't like...
