a solid block of adaptations and sequels. people used to criticize this sort of thing as indicating that hollywood has run out of ideas and i don’t see that take anymore? i think we’ve all kind of realized that people don’t care about originality: what we want is a mythology

as i’ve gotten older the prospect of learning the details of an entirely new fictional world has come to feel increasingly tiring. i think i really do just want more and better stories set in worlds i’ve already come to know and love. a man can only hold so many worlds

back to the future II made a joke about “jaws 19” and it was supposed to be over-the-top satire (so i imagine), like haha wouldn’t that be hilarious if moviemakers had nothing better to do than make 18 sequels to jaws meanwhile the MCU is at, what, 26 movies and counting?

I think it's still a fairly often expressed idea (depending on what community you're in), but as it gained more popularity as a take there was an expected reaction against it and over time the entire discussion became dull so that people got bored by it.

like omg i wonder if hes gonna get bitten by a spider and spend 3 min playing with his new web and hit a wall again this time i def think spiderman was more discovered than invented. I'm built for it and they're just hitting neurons that were already there

Remakes are cool, but you know what is even cooler? Believing in the brilliance of screenwriters, and believing in the brilliance of the audiences. Film was a platform to amplify the voices of screenwriters, many of which understood the audience better than anyone else alive

Our generation needs products to be legible to all at all times. We stopped exploring storyspace in movies not because we covered all the good regions, but because exploring new regions mean that movies are illegible before they are released, and we cannot afford that anymore

i still think this means hollywood has run out of ideas (or more likely doesn’t want to take risks) and i want originality, i don’t care about mythology (unless it’s really long obscure fanfics, those make fun mythologies)
