sometimes i worry that the best approach to personal growth under capitalism may be to deliberately handicap yourself to be stuck obsessing over one step along the path that you can build a career out of, instead of trying to move on to the next step

could you provide an example?

like letโs say you grew up with a lot of sexual repression and you learned how to overcome it and you wrote a book about sexual liberation and maybe have a coaching practice or a workshop series - i know of a few people like this, itโs great stuff, but thereโs other stuff too

in some sense the best thing for having a stable career doing sexual liberation stuff would be to stay obsessed with this theme; if you do enough that you actually stop caring and move on to something else, that something else may not have any synergy with your existing work

hmm true in a way, but even if that sth else doesn't have 100% synergy with the existing work there are transferable skills/ knowledge, am i right

probably yeah. i guess i am worried by how few people in this area i see doing this kind of self-reinvention, the ones i know about mostly find one thing and stick to it :/

i think the true test is, what if your current work falls out of vogue? how will u pivot into sth else? people always find ways to get around that :)
