sometimes i worry that the best approach to personal growth under capitalism may be to deliberately handicap yourself to be stuck obsessing over one step along the path that you can build a career out of, instead of trying to move on to the next step

let me rephrase: sometimes i worry that i, personally, will not be able to make a living if i keep moving on from my old obsessions to new obsessions as i grow and change as a person

I feel like you're quite obviously skilled enough in a few domains that you can fairly easily _make a living_ while ignoring developing those skills

I sometimes feel like the trick is for us to all do this for different things like did for Alexander Technique and just bootstrap an economy out of it

Seems dependent on the money making capacity that results from interests.
It seems to me there are roles that benefit from having exposure to a variety of pursuits, certain kinds of entrepreneurs and managers both gain from having worn and being able to wear many hats.
