What if anxiety&depression⬆️ in kids is not as much bc of phones&social media but more because of the rigged, senseless school system they function in, fraught with busywork, absurd behavior demands (don't move!), arbitrary grading, inflicted guilt

as much as i'm sympathetic to this pov hasn't that stuff been around for a long time, so it wouldn't explain a *recent* increase? or has it actually gotten worse recently?

my impression is that the busywork had a huge increase over the past twenty years. I've heard absurd stuff about how much homework kids get.
Then there's Covid and political turmoil, and I do think kids are very sensitive to the psychological state of their country...

Agree and can confirm, watching my own kids, my friends' kids, and those I teach/tutor

On the brightside, while covid accelerated a lot of terrible trends in childrearing, it also caused a lot of people to pull their kids out of school and explore other alternatives. Like 20% of kids dropped out, and while that's not strictly good, it does mean exploration happens
