What if anxiety&depression⬆️ in kids is not as much bc of phones&social media but more because of the rigged, senseless school system they function in, fraught with busywork, absurd behavior demands (don't move!), arbitrary grading, inflicted guilt

as much as i'm sympathetic to this pov hasn't that stuff been around for a long time, so it wouldn't explain a *recent* increase? or has it actually gotten worse recently?
my impression is that the busywork had a huge increase over the past twenty years. I've heard absurd stuff about how much homework kids get.
Then there's Covid and political turmoil, and I do think kids are very sensitive to the psychological state of their country...

Smart phones also much, much more prevalent than they were ten years ago. Wouldn't be surprised if the apps are better at holding people in, too

Definitely gotten worse. Seen it under my eyes, say in the last 5-7 years. So many more ways to play the system, which makes it then senseless as a game to play. And a generation of parents who joins in (instead of ignoring) the stupid pressure on the kids

social media illuminates what was hidden
always been bad, but now we get to see it
iiuc there’s been a substantial increase in stress and intensity around the school + college admissions game

Yep. And playing that game, with overly involved parents pushing it through, becomes the endeavour, rather than learning or even just teenaging. Bleak.

Yes. Exactly. And, from my understanding, it has gotten worse, particularly in young girls.
I consider the an excellent explainer on this phenomenon.
