watched 21 jump street last night on a whim. it was fun but it has this like... gay panic humor? that comedies in the late 2000s / early 2010s were weirdly into that i think has totally disappeared in the last few years, it was weird to see again

community also had a jarring amount of this in the first few seasons - jokes where pierce calls jeff and britta gay, then jokes suggesting that pierce is himself closeted - people used to be really into this stuff and then it was totally wiped out!

i kinda wonder if (male) filmmakers were working through a reaction to gay rights stuff - like yeah, we're not gonna be openly homophobic anymore, but what does that imply for male platonic intimacy, really - and i wonder if they really got a chance to finish

my best male friendship is one where we constantly try to out-gay each other even though we're both straight and it feels like a very fun and healthy way to deal with it. now that homosexuality is thinkable, you can't put it back in the box. Gotta go through and out.

I was once at a party where all the guys were doing this and it's honestly the easiest time I ever had integrating with a group of unknown guys
later one of them called to ask me out tho so maybe it was less straight than I thought 🤔

I watched this movie recently too and had a similar sense of disorientation. I got the sense of the market has changed - people in culture around the time the movie was released were way more likely to enjoy and make jokes like that.

This sort of thing has been a part of entertainment for a long time. Have it seen Some Like it Hot?
