One of my earliest memories is my evangelical community publicly shaming a mother for allowing her kid to read Harry Potter, but yes, I’m sure cancel culture was invented like 3 years ago by college students, that’s exactly what happened.

Her, no. Did other people from my hometown lose work for perceived irreligiosity? Yes. Were businesses boycotted for almost no reason? All the time. Did families have to move to new towns? A couple times yeah.

You may be underestimating how much church life IS LIFE in a lot of parts of rural America. In some places, if you were ostracized by your church, it’s roughly equivalent to being shamed by the internet in other places today. Feels like the world is ending.

It’s not fun.
On the plus side, the heat and pressure of navigating that environment for 20 years made me the person I am, so… medium-yay 😂
