when people say they don't want to be inundated with "negativity" what they mean is that they don't want to feel powerless. it's confusing terminology tho because in this sense the opposite of "negativity" is not "positivity," it's action

i think they don't want to be reminded that the way they cut themselves slack hurts people because they haven't properly integrated the limits of their agency.

most people have not really grappled with why they haven't achieved all they imagine they're capable of. that's why feeling powerless bothers them. it's also why they can't justify what they don't do to make the world better.
