when we tell stories about magic but coat those stories with a layer of "btw magic is impossible" we are saying that having power and helping people is impossible

David Graeber made a similar argument in “The Utopia of Rules” where he describes fantasy literature and RPGs as in a way legitimizing the antimagical bureaucracy of modernity by implying the impossibility of the fantasy
