when we tell stories about magic but coat those stories with a layer of "btw magic is impossible" we are saying that having power and helping people is impossible

2. "magician" obviously derives from "magic" and so does "magus". "magic" is itself pretty interesting: wiktionary says the likely root means "to be able to, to help; power" en.wiktionary.org/wiki/magic

fireballs and stuff are a tremendous distraction, and in that sense D&D may be the worst thing that's ever happened to magic your inability to throw fireballs is how you convince yourself that magic is not real and you can't have it

magic has nothing to do with violating the laws of physics. it has much to do with violating *expectations*, and we can reflect on what in our society causes us to conflate the two

magic is... every "hey guys, watch this" every "not today Satan" every "wow, I needed that today" every "how did you know?" every "someone who looks like me can do *that*?" every "maybe things are going to be ok after all"
