poll (also would love to hear more detailed responses): have you ever "just decided" or "just willed" that you would change in some way, e.g. give up smoking or drinking, become a kinder person, a large change like that? if so, did it stick?

Yes, a couple of times. It worked best when I chose a new identity and then focused on actions that help me embody that identity. You can't choose to quit something, but you can choose to become a different person who does different things. twitter.com/made_in_cosmos

i might be thinking of multiple TLP posts but this is one of them; searching for "kind of person" returns a few posts

you know... the QC post.. on feelings and stuff.. that one... Lately I like more the framing of @AgnesCallard on aspiration, deciding to pursue something and letting the pursuing create goals which you couldn't have predicted beforehand.

"You'll never believe this crazy thing that happened to me. I was sad and now I'm happy. I was alone and now my life is full of connection and love. The funniest thing happened to me in the way to the grave, I healed and laughed after a decades of confusion and fear."

Rudolf Steiner used to advise people to will themselves to like things — “you don’t like broccoli? Just will yourself to like it” Trying to find a source on this but it was pretty awesome
