I'm confused about cafes where you order/pay first at the counter and, if you pay by card, the screen asks you to add a tip. Doesn't it make sense to give tips at the *end* of the meal? I know that servers rely on tips, but also at these cafes the people aren't really servers??

I feel bad for saying "no tip" but it doesn't make sense to me to tip someone who isn't actually waiting on me, and before I've even tried the food or whatever. Is there an expectation that I do tip? Why?
