As a teacher of poetry what I can tell you for sure is people want poems to rhyme. They want poems to rhyme so bad. But we won’t give it to them

idk anything about the history of poetry but it probably stopped rhyming because of WWI or some shit right? when the world breaks apart you don’t know what’s worth remembering anymore

Song lyrics still rhyme all the time, and I think they are as much poetry as anything else, so I dispute the premise.

there are probably a bunch of different concepts that all deserve the name “poetry” and/but i think it’s worth noting that song lyrics apparently count as different enough that nobody publishes song lyrics in poetry anthologies, e.g.

I feel like a lot of modern poetry, like modern art, was meant to be revolutionary and challenge the elite snobbery of classical art, but missed that a lot of classical art/poetry was actually kind of popular, so all it did was replace the elite.
