rhyming is too powerful and we don’t deserve it anymore. poetry that rhymes is for stuff that’s worth remembering forever. people don’t say stuff that’s worth remembering forever these days

As a teacher of poetry what I can tell you for sure is people want poems to rhyme. They want poems to rhyme so bad. But we won’t give it to them

Yes and. Ppl also like near rhyme, alliteration, assonance. Word play in general. I think in part ppl went away from perfect rhymes because it was too rote, formulaic. A lot of room for creativity opens up when you relax the constraints a little, but not completely.

I heard once that Latin cases mean you rhyme almost by default, so Roman poets worked to avoid rhymes
