what there is is performances of sanity, and people do those to fulfill the social contract on their end. the more the social contract appears to be breaking on other people’s ends, the less incentive there is for anyone to continue the performance of sanity

There's also actually trying to make something hard work, where you have to make hard choices that you don't already know how to think about. It frequently *conflicts* with performative sanity.
