Something you might find of particular interest: https://acoup.blog/2019/10/25/collections-practical-polytheism-part-i-knowledge/… says that in ancient times, people believed that their religion worked because they had practiced it for quite a while and they weren't dead yet. Have thought of that in the context of trauma a lot.

While the logic sounds a little silly to us, there's a point to it: if you are still alive, then you must have been doing *something* right, so it makes sense to stick to your old behaviors.
