really interesting and weird how torrenting has become, like, another one of these hyperspecific generational markers. there was a pretty specific time period where i got music from kazaa / limewire and movies from torrenting, before spotify and netflix respectively twitter.com/taalumot/statu

then i had to learn how to get rid of worms and trojans and honestly it was pretty cool to learn how to edit registry keys and stuff like that. meanwhile i hear zoomers don’t understand how filesystems work 🤔

my fraternity had a movie server on a dedicated apple mini that had hundreds of torrented movies. great for movie nights. kinda sad to think about the Kids These Days not being able to have that experience if they don’t know how to torrent and want to watch obscure shit

also in retrospect it’s interesting how we all became complicit in and normalized among ourselves this mild form of crime. i can see a pretty direct pipeline from pirating music and movies as a kid to pirating textbooks and stuff in grad school. i still pirate books now
