this confuses me a lot and it's not how i use the word at all. it feels a little bad to say this but in many ways i currently feel like i have zero "friends," in the sense of "people i hang out with regularly" which is what "friend" meant to me in high school and college

americans throw the word "friend" around like a bean bag they'll spend one evening at some meetup and be like "i made 3 new friends"

pretty sure i've complained about this on twitter before and i'll probably keep complaining about it but it's fucked up that the quality of my social life peaked in college and i've never gone back to that peak for longer than 2 weeks at a time

These are things nobody tells you about that would be good advice. Something to tell your younger self as a heads up. Not to take friendship (in the sense you described) for granted, to cherish those moments and hold onto worthy friendships
