so i don't buy this and the reason i don't buy this is that it doesn't happen at parties. at a good party you get happier as the night goes on, not sadder. i think the real reason is that we're supposed to be surrounded by our tribe at night and often aren't, except at parties

the reason you feel sadder at night is because your body has literally run out of the chemicals for regulating your emotions and maintaining a happy mood

in my imagined fantasy ancestral life the day is for hunting and gathering or whatever and the night is for chilling around a fire with your buddies. the best nights are the nights that come closest to that and the worst nights are the ones where you're alone in your bedroom

also not as simple as "there's a emotion regulation chemical" and if you can make them it's not clear how "run out" would work also if this were true there wouldn't be night owls, only morning people

I would propose that sleep rebalances emotions, so lack of sleep heightens specific emotions. Depression is less like sadness and more like emotional dampening so it can be helped even by heightening unhappiness. Social is a proxy for which emotions get heightened.

Could be that you are more sensitive to the environment when you are tired. You run out of chemicals you need to force affective homeostasis. If you are in a festive place you feel happy, if you are alone in your room you feel sad, if you are with your SO you feel horny, etc.

I'm pretty sure this is science* but it's definitely not the only factor, and in the presence of stimulation is a very weak one *something I read once that seemed legit and will be happy if it turns out it's false

idk about "false" exactly but like... the implied framing, if you completely ignore the neurochemistry, is that there's like a "neutral" night and whatever happens to you on a night like that is the "neutral" outcome
