my pov on being very careful about who you follow on twitter has shifted from “it’s how you have a good time!” more towards “it’s literally how you avoid this website driving you literally crazy”

it's turned out being overly cautious at who I interact with regularly IRL has the positive side-effect of making my TL here significantly less annoying
you can overfit your circle, but having a group that keeps most of this site's worst stuff out is well worth that risk

if you use 'latest tweets' view, it also slows down the content firehose somewhat, which is a useful circuit breaker if you often get stuck scrolling from inertia

also may heavily influence the probabilities of who you’ll be close to in the future! I just like fully assume I’ll meet my wife, all future financial investments, new favorite books and papers and such, most of my good friends going forward etc here

I expect it to be pretty downstream, like doing something here leads me to visit a city where xyz happens. But I’d be surprised if this wasn’t upstream in some form
