the backlash against sex positivity reminds me a lot of a thing i ran into teaching at a high school summer program, which is that every time we tried to say "X is good, maybe" the students heard "an oversimplified, twisted version of X is mandatory"

when you try to apply that counter to a generation that isn't growing up with much sex negativity memes in the first place it's really easy to push too far in the other direction, and when "sex positivity" becomes "you must enjoy having casual sex or you're not cool"... 😬

hmm the marie kondo parallel runs deep. her catchphrase is literally "spark joy" and somehow people twisted it into this minimalist obligation. and similarly i think sex positivity was sposed to be about the joy of sex but people managed to twist it into an obligation anyway

speaking for myself when i was walking around repressed and dissociated all the time it was largely impossible for me to tell which things sparked joy, and it was also largely impossible for me to really enjoy or arguably even consent to sex
