i think the term "man-child" has a lot to offer once you stop seeing it as automatically derogatory and start seeing it as a more neutral description, or even as - god forbid - a potential cause for empathy

quite likely! part of what i’m getting at here, though, is that i think men do this because they are still in some sense children who have not grown up, and one could imagine trying to help them grow up (not that i think this is your job or anyone else’s in particular)

Sure, my frustration comes from the man-children who acknowledge their immaturity but claim to be content in Neverland and shrug off any suggestion to grow up. It isn't meant as an insult, more a reminder that I shouldn't expect normal adult reciprocity from the relationship.
