i think the term "man-child" has a lot to offer once you stop seeing it as automatically derogatory and start seeing it as a more neutral description, or even as - god forbid - a potential cause for empathy

I don't quite understand what you mean by "a cause for empathy"
It seems to contradict the nature of empathy to me. Empathy is the process of understanding emotions of others that you don't share. You can't make judgments on something you, by definition, don't understand. +

The only cause for empathy that makes sense to me is actions and emotions you don't understand or share, any and all of them.
Empathy then, could be a cause for sympathy maybe?
