the most helpful thing i've done for my sleep recently is to, right before bed, take 30 minutes to an hour to shut off all my screens and lie in bed eyes closed and *not* fall asleep, just rest my eyes and let my system work out the stress of looking at screens all day

it improves my sleep even if i don't start doing it until very late. like going to bed at 2am is worse than doing this starting at 2am and then going to bed at 3am. admittedly other people who try doing this might accidentally fall asleep. i am largely incapable of that somehow

often i'll be in a state late at night which is a mix of being very tired and very wired and this is the best thing i've found for winding down the wired part so i'm just tired and then going to bed is easy

also obviously often i am looking at screens all day to avoid looking at feelings and stuff so this is also a chance to do some catch-up processing. iirc also has a night-time routine involving processing?

last night in particular i stretched out a bunch of tension in my shoulders and that felt pretty good too

Kind of similar, but I like your framing

Falling asleep is so mysterious. I don't notice it happen.
It's a comfort to know that it's not my responsibility, I just need to lay there

This works but I do have to consciously focus on something benign like counting my breaths for it to work. Otherwise my mind can wander to things that keep me up.
